Subject: Alcohol License application, 7-9 High Street, Shepperton. TW17 9AJ

I write to object to approval of the above application for the following reasons:

1.    Impact on children

The property of the applicant is on route to and from local schools. Alcohol is a harmful substance and the intended business will attract children into the shop and expose them to alcohol sales with the possibility of items being bought for them by young adults.

2.    Crime

There has been an upsurge in theft from local supermarkets and shops. This application will open another opportunity for theft and encourage young people who are easily influenced to do the same.

3.    Nuisance

There have been numerous occasions where I have witnessed young people making a nuisance around the entrance of local shops. On the few occasions I approached them they are rude, take no notice, make amess and hide behind their age as they know I can’t do anything.

4.    Public safety.

There are 5 shops that sell alcohol in or close to Shepperton High Street another outlet increases the likelihood of excess drinking and bawdy behavior that could lead to fights impacting safety.

Yours faithfully,

Representation Four:

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to formally object to the recent application for an off-licence at 7 - 9 High Street, Shepperton.

As a local resident, I am extremely concerned about the impact that granting another alcohol licence will have on our neighbourhood. There are already numerous outlets in the immediate area selling alcohol, including Co-op, Sainsbury’s, M&S plus the two newsagents/off licences. The market is already saturated, and it is difficult to see how another off-licence is necessary or in the public interest.

Furthermore, I understand that the proposed opening hours extend into the evening. This is particularly troubling for what is otherwise a quiet residential area. Longer opening hours risk encouraging loitering, increased noise, littering, and anti-social behaviour, particularly late at night – issues that are already a concern in some parts of the high street.

I am especially worried about the impact on families, children, and older residents who value the peaceful character of our neighbourhood. The potential for increased alcohol availability and extended hours runs counter to efforts to maintain a safe and respectful community environment.

For these reasons, I respectfully urge the licensing authority to reject this application.

Thank you for considering my concerns.

Yours faithfully,

Subject: Objection to Licensing Application for Proposed Off-Licence Convenience Store in Shepperton

To: licensing@spelthorne.gov.uk
Date: 14th July 2025
Licensing Application Reference: 7-9 High Street, Shepperton TW17 9AJ

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to formally object to the Licencing application for the proposed off-licence convenience store in Shepperton, which seeks to operate from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily.

As a local resident, I have serious concerns about the impact this development would have on our community. My objections are based on the following grounds:

Over-provision of Alcohol Retailers
Shepperton already has at least six establishments licensed to sell alcohol. The addition of another off-licence is unnecessary and would contribute to an over-saturation of alcohol outlets in the area, which potentially increases the risk to increased anti-social behaviour, public nuisance, and strain on local policing resources.

Public Safety and Amenity
Extended opening hours from early morning to late at night increases the risk of disturbances, particularly in the evenings by potentially attracting anti social behaviour from the surrounding areas. This could negatively affect the quality of life for nearby residents, especially families and elderly individuals. In granting this application cost are likely to increase to police this establishment.

Contrary to Local Licencing Policy
The proposed change of business may conflict with local licensing policies aimed at maintaining the character and safety of residential areas in light of the drug and alcohol abuse in the village. I urge the licensing bodies to consider whether this application aligns with the objectives and the needs of the residents and community family wellbeing.

Lack of Community Need
There is no demonstrable need for another alcohol retailer in Shepperton. The existing stores adequately serve the local population, and this proposal appears to be driven by commercial interest rather than community benefit.

I respectfully request the licensing authority refuse this application in the interest of preserving the safety, character, and cohesion of our community in Shepperton.

Thank you for considering my objection.

Yours faithfully,
